Background
Many Christians look towards the modern nation of Israel as a fulfillment of prophecy. They see not only a people restored in the land but a future restoration of the sanctuary and temple.
Many look at these recent developments as a sign of the restoration of Israel because those scattered around the world had returned from exile:

1. May 14, 1948. The state of Israel was created to solve the problem of the Jews who were displaced by the events of World War 2. Many Jews around the world immigrated to Israel.
2. 1991. The fall of the Soviet Union. Many more Jews emigrated from many other countries in the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia.

Those who believe that the physical country and people of Israel are the only chosen people, see a separate plan of salvation for Israel and the church. This has certain implications for the future of the nation of Israel.

1. Israel is saved by keeping the law. Others are saved by faith in Christ.
2. Israel must return to the sacrifice of lambs for forgiveness when they rebuild their temple.

I believe that this is wrong.

The Plan Of Salvation
However, this is what the apostles and the evidence teach.

1. Covenant. The everlasting covenant was made from the beginning. Eve was promised a child who would deliver her.
   I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel. (Genesis 3: 15)
2. Abraham. Abraham and his children were called to deliver this promised child. (Genesis 15: 6). Abraham was chosen because of His faith in God. Through this race, God was able to keep knowledge of Himself in the world by the Torah, their feasts and the sanctuary.
   God made a covenant with Abraham because Abraham believed God. So Abraham became not just the father of Israel but the father of the faithful.
   Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. (Romans 4: 3; Genesis 15: 6)
   It is not the children of the flesh who are children of God but children of the promise. (Romans 9: 8)
   And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh. that they may walk in my statutes and keep my ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people and I will be their God. (Ezekiel 11: 19-20)
   They were also to bring in "everlasting righteousness" by being the nation among whom the Messiah would be born.
   In the book of Hebrews, the New Testament clearly says that the true people of God are not through birth - but faith. Abraham won the confidence of God by believing in God.
3. Christ. Christ became this promised child. Christ became the only faithful Jew who kept the covenant. At His death Israel broke the covenant and God was able to establish a better covenant for the entire world through Jesus Christ. All people inherit the promise through Jesus.
   If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3: 29)
   
4. One Plan of Salvation for All. There is only one plan for saving the entire world. This plan has been in effect even before the world was created.
   Revelation 13: 8 says that Christ was the Lamb who was killed from the foundation of the world.
   There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were also called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4: 4-6)
   
   • Christ is the source of salvation. He is the seed that was promised to Eve.
     For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also the head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach. if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister. (Colossians 1: 16-23)
     
   • Faith is the method of salvation. We must believe in Christ.

Righteousness By Faith Is The Plan Of Salvation
Everyone will come to a knowledge of Christ.

• Gentiles. The gentiles will join themselves into the body of Christ by faith.
  But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them in the rich root of the olive tree ... and they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again (Romans 11: 17, 23)
  
• Israel Returns. The Jews will be grafted back into the body of Christ if they do not continue in unbelief. They do not have a separate plan. They must believe in Christ. Zechariah 12 says that in the end they will accept Christ.
  Gentiles Called. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? (Romans 11: 17-24)
  Israel Saved. For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, so that you will not be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,
  "The deliverer will come from Zion He will remove ungodliness from Jacob" "This is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins" (Romans 11: 25-27)
  At about the time of the Latter Rain, when the rest of the world accepts Christ, the "fullness of the Gentiles" will come into the fold of Christ. At that time, Israel will also recognize the Messiah and their temporary hardness will melt.
  All Disobedient. From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all. Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. (Romans 11: 28-36)
  
  God Takes Responsibility
  The plan of God was to allow all people to be disobedient so that He could be merciful to all people. John 12: 40 and Isaiah 6: 10 even says that God blinded them.
  This blinding may have caused them to reject Christ, so that He could be killed.
  Note that when God said He hardened Pharaoh's heart, we later learned that Pharaoh hardened his own heart. We can see this action of God, not as His direct manipulation of the actions of people, but as His withdrawal of His good influence so that they will behave more naturally. God does not tempt men to do evil.

Christ
Christ inherits the covenant because He became the one faithful Jew who kept the covenant. He becomes the new Israel through whom the entire world will be blessed. He will draw the world (including the old Israel) to God. This new covenant is based on a better promise and a sacrifice, not a different law.
Everyone must be born through Him because He is the Father of the New Israel.
Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?" Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3: 3-5)

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. "For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. "But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God." (John 3: 16-21)

Christ was the one faithful Jew who kept the covenant	Christ reconciles the world to Himself as He draws all humans to Him.	The world becomes part of the new Israel as the Gentiles accept Christ.	Everything is in Christ. He makes one nation of the world as we are born again.

• Sacrifice. Christ was the perfect sacrifice, executed one time for all time.
• Law. This is to be written on our hearts. We will love the law and make it part of us.

  The Old Israel Sacrifice. Animals continually killed. Law. The people kept disobeying. Priest. The priests were imperfect and mortal.

• Priest. Jesus will be our high priest forever. He is from the order of Melchizedek, a different priesthood with a better sacrifice - Himself. The tribe of Levi cannot be the permanent priesthood according to Hebrews because the sacrificial system that they ministered under has failed to resolve the problem. But God was responsible for the system, why did He introduce something that would fail? The purpose of the system was not to forgive sins, but it was to involve humans in the plan and to teach us about the perfect plan.
• King. Jesus will be the King, from the tribe of David, on the throne of David.
• Earth. A new heaven and earth where God Himself lives with us. In this place all evil will be gone forever.
• One People. A new heart dedicated to loving God and obeying the law.

The Global Restoration Of The Spiritual Israel
Revelation 19 - 20 places the prophecies of Ezekiel 38 - 48 in a global light because it merges into the time of the end.

• The whole house of Israel will be restored. This includes the Gentiles and the nation of Israel.
• Israel went into exile because of sin and were given into the hands of their enemies (Ezekiel 39: 23). The children of Adam and Eve are in exile on the earth and given over to Satan.
• His Spirit will be poured out on the whole house of Israel (Verse 29). This is the everlasting covenant.

When Will The Physical Nation Of Israel Be Restored?
Romans 11: 25-27 says that the physical nation of Israel will come back and be grafted back into the family of God. When will this occur?
Zechariah 12: 2-3, 9-10 gives us a clue. It will occur when the nations prepare for the battle of Armageddon. This battle will end after the millennium.

1. After they have been gathered from the nations.
   When I bring them back from the peoples and gather from the lands of their enemies, then I will be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations.
   Latter Rain. I will not hide my face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel, declares the Lord. (Ezekiel 39: 27, 29)
   This gathering has already occurred. It started when the nation was formed on May 14, 1948 and ended when many Jews emigrated after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989-91.
2. When Jerusalem is Hated and Surrounded.
   Look, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem it will also be against Judah. It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it. In that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot among pieces of wood and a flaming torch among sheaves ... And in that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that come against Israel. (Zechariah 12: 2-3, 6,9)
   Israel irritates the world by its actions and ignites a volatile situation.
3. After Their Conversion and Acceptance of the Pierced Messiah.

   The Pierced Messiah For these things came to pass to fulfill the scripture, Not a bone of Him shall be broken". And again another scripture says, "They will look on Him whom they pierced". John 19: 36-37 appears to say that the fulfillment of Zechariah 12: 10 was at the crucifixion. However, the political events at the crucifixion are not the events of the prophecy of Zechariah 12. Jerusalem was not surrounded by the nations, they did not mourn for Christ and God was not fighting the nations to rescue Israel. Zechariah 12 occurs in the last days. Therefore, what was fulfilled at the crucifixion was the piercing of the Messiah. In the future, when Israel is surrounded as Zechariah described, they will recognize the pierced Messiah.

   
   I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and supplication, so that they will look at Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like bitter weeping over a firstborn. (Zechariah 12: 10)
   God does something miraculous. He converts them with the Spirit.
   
   The Latter Rain. This outpouring of the Spirit that converts Israel is the same outpouring of the Spirit that converts the rest of the world. So all of Israel, Jews and Gentiles, will accept the Messiah during this glorious time when their hearts are melted. Then the house of the Lord becomes a house for all people.
   
   It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind. And your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. (Joel 2: 28-29)
4. Before the Second Coming.
   Weeping over their rejection of the messengers from God, Christ predicted that He would not come until the physical house of Israel recognized Him.
   
   Look, your house is being left to you desolate! For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Matthew 23: 38-39)

The Objections To Jesus Christ As The Moshiach (Messiah)

Jews have several expectations of the Messiah which they believe that Jesus did not fulfill. We believe that everything the Jewish male was commanded to do, every symbol in the Torah, the feasts and the sanctuary pointed to the work of the Messiah. Jesus said.
... all things written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. (Luke 24: 44)

• Observe Jewish Laws. (Isaiah 11:2-5) We can clearly demonstrate that He kept Jewish laws and will keep all of them in the future. Jesus said that He did not come to change the law, but to fulfill it. He obeyed all the laws and ceremonies in every detail and His actions in future prophecies show Him still observing these laws. We can now explain even those laws that Jews still observe but do not know what they mean. Our conclusion is that everything pointed towards the Messiah and the covenant.
  • Sacrificial Laws. He died in the manner specified by the sacrificial laws and on the Passover.
    Prince of the Covenant. He also died on the year and date of the prophecy of Daniel. We can show that, according to Daniel, the Messiah must appear within 483 years after the command to release the Jews from captivity in Babylon. Therefore the Messiah should have appeared between 124 BC and 104 AD. There is a tradition which says that the Messiah must appear in the second temple period. This temple was destroyed in 70 AD. Look for your Messiah before then, between 124 BC and 70 AD.
  • Passover Seder. Christ fulfilled all the symbols of this meal at His death.
  • Sabbath. He kept the Sabbath even when He was dead. He rested in the grave. He was buried on Friday evening and resurrected on Sunday morning.
  • Do not Plant a Field with Two Seeds. Jews and Gentiles were chosen at separate times to work the field.
  • Honeymoon for a Year. He postpones the Battle of Armageddon for 1000 years because He comes to marry the church. A new husband is not allowed to work or go to war for a year.
  • Eye for an Eye. At the end of time He will punish the wicked by these laws.
  • Stoning for Adultery. He will stone the wicked and the great harlot at the Second Coming.
  • Hate Your Enemy. We are allowed to hate sin and death and Satan, but every man is now our neighbor and is defined by another set of laws.
  • Christ Suffers the Curses. He submitted to the curses in the laws of the Blessings and Curses.
  • Boiling a Goat in His Mother's Milk. He chose someone to care for His mother before He became the sin offering (goat).
  • Wearing Clothes of Wool and Linen. The prohibition against righteousness by works in the sanctuary.
• Great Judge Who Establishes Court System Based on Jewish Law. (Jeremiah 33:15)
  This is one system that He did establish. In this system He is appointed the judge, all judgment is removed from humans because their court systems were never perfect and can never be perfect. He appeared to change the laws about revenge and hate but we can show that these were not changed. He changed the status of the people to whom the Jews applied the law and He did not appoint any more humans to administer justice. He reserved vengeance for Himself since He is a righteous judge.
  Vengeance. ... Vengeance is Mine, I will repay. (Hebrews 10: 30; Deuteronomy 32: 35)
  Judge Appointed. And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. (Acts 10: 42.)
  He has established a court date in the future where He will execute judgments and punishments face to face. The feast system teaches that final judgment can be put off until one appointed date on Yom Kippur. Judaism even teaches that there are three great times for global judgments during the fall feasts. Therefore, the absence of righteous human courts in Israel is not an indication of the failure of the Messiah. Your feast system teaches that there are different times appointed for specific tasks.
• Human Being. Everything that Christ did was done as a human being, "the Son of man". The miracles that He performed were also done by the ancient prophets. But He claimed to be their God in human flesh. So we will examine the proofs of this claim from the Torah.
  
  The Suffering Messiah. (Isaiah 53) In listing the Messianic prophecies, some Jews exclude the prophecy of Isaiah that clearly shows the Messiah suffering for our sins. So in their Messianic expectations, they see a Messiah who fulfills all of the great feasts except Passover. They deny the Messiah who suffers for sin.
  If Isaiah 11 is a prophecy about the Messiah then Isaiah 53 certainly is also. It clearly speaks about a role as the Passover Lamb
  Lamb of God. By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many as He will bear their iniquities.
  Our Substitute and Intercessor. Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the booty with the strong. Because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He Himself bore the sins of many, and interceded for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53: 11-12)
  So you must decide how He could possibly suffer to the point of death, yet still become this great military leader who lives on forever to establish a righteous and perfect world. The answer cannot be that He suffered and died after these great exploits because there is no sin or murder at that time. The answer must be because He conquered death first while the world was at its worst.
  Your father Abraham made this same leap of faith in his reasoning when he was asked to offer up Isaac, the child of the promise. He reasoned that God must be able to raise him from the dead.
  
  The Claim To Be God. So far, I believe that I have made strong arguments for the evidence of Christ as the Messiah. But how can I reconcile His claim to be one with God with the words of the SHMA.
  Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is One! (Deuteronomy 6: 4)
  I admit that I cannot explain the nature of God. But marriage is an example of two becoming one flesh! Perhaps divinity is three in one Spirit. Whatever that looks like. But I can show symbols of divinity in at least two places.
  • The Hidden Matzoh. The stack of three matzohs on the Passover seder is a picture of one broken and protected by two others. This is a picture like the ark of the covenant. Even if you believe that the two on either side are angels, the symbols still point to God in the middle being broken.
    If you believe that the outer body is represented by the two on the outside, then the picture is still one of hidden divinity being broken. Perhaps the picture of the trinity is not correct. Perhaps He is the same Person in three different roles in time. But God veiled Himself in human flesh and died for your sins.
  • Humanity Hiding Divinity. There are at least twelve symbols of Judaism that show a picture of divinity cloaked in humanity. To be more accurate, it is a symbol of a source of life hidden by an outer covering. But what it shows is that this Man had the power from within Himself to come back to life. It is not a symbol of Him being restored to life from an external source.
    • Dying with Four Holes in His Body. The sacrifice would be killed with four holes in His body.
    • Five Symbols of Judaism. He kept the covenant that was symbolized in circumcision, tzizit, mezuzah and the tfellin and died in a manner that mirrored these symbols.
    • The Schedule in the Sanctuary and Feasts. The work of atonement is spread out over time.
  • Messianic Prophecies. Jewish scholars list many references in the old Testament to the Messiah. According to them, the Messiah is the God of the Old Testament who led them in the exodus and gave them the covenant. In addition, one prophecy recognized by the rabbis as Messianic calls Him a God who would be born as a human.
    For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and this government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9: 6)
• Charismatic Leader. I think we can agree that He is a charismatic leader who has left a world movement that is believed by a third of the global population. And another third, the Muslims, believe that He was a great prophet. Five days before His crucifixion, the Jews wanted to make Him their king until He said that His kingdom was not of this world, shattering their hopes of removing the Roman yoke.
• Military Leader. This is where Jesus failed the Jews, He did not defeat the Romans and establish a Jewish kingdom of righteousness on the earth. But He claims to have defeated Satan. And He will come as a military leader at the head of a mighty army to save the righteous during the Second Coming. (Revelation 19).
• Perfect World. There will be no more sin. (Zephaniah 3:13).
• Establish a World Government in Israel. (Isaiah 2:2-4; 11:10; 42:1) The New Jerusalem will be placed on the same location as Jerusalem.
• Sanctuary and Thanksgiving Sacrifices. (Jeremiah 33:18). God will be the sanctuary who lives with us.
• Judaism is the Only Religion. (Isaiah 2:3; 11:10; Micah 4:2-3; Zechariah 14:9) There will be one God, one faith.

Several Appearances. Can the Messiah fulfill His mission in several comings and not contradict Jewish prophecies? The feast system teaches different times for the work of the Messiah. This is symbolized in the commandment that all Jewish males must appear in Jerusalem three times in the year. These are Passover, Shavout and Tabernacles (ingathering). God will appear on earth three times.
Three times a year you shall celebrate a feast to Me. Three times a year all your males should appear before the Lord. (Exodus 23: 14, 17)

• Old Jerusalem (Tabernacles 4 BC). He was born during the feast of Tabernacles and appeared in Jerusalem for His circumcision.
• Old Jerusalem (Passover 31 AD). Jesus was in Jerusalem as the paschal lamb.
• Old Jerusalem (Shavout). The disciples were instructed to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Shavout).
• New Jerusalem (Yom Kippur). He is appearing on our behalf in the heavenly sanctuary as the High Priest.
• New Jerusalem (Tabernacles). He returns to earth the second time to save the righteous.
• New Jerusalem (Tabernacles). One thousand years later He returns to earth a third time with a new city that is placed on the same location as the old Jerusalem.

The Curse Is Applied
The prophecies and actions of God seems to point back to the covenant and the blessings and curses. We see the whole world and the church subject to the same punishments of the covenant made to Israel. The curses can be seen in the experience of the world.

As we demonstrated in the lesson on the battle of Armageddon, it is an interrupted war that starts before the millennium and ends after it. Before the millennium, the wicked surround the physical nation of Israel to make war and they simultaneously persecute the people of God around the world. God begins his fight by sending the seven last plagues and rescues global Israel.
After the millennium, they surround the New Jerusalem and try to take it by force after they have been judged guilty.
