Bible study is essential for the serious believer because they are a testimony about God.
Reveals Christ. ... all things written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. (Luke 24: 44)
Example. Now these things happened to them as an example and they are written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the world are come. (1 Corinthians 10: 11)
Encouragement. For whatever things were previously written were written for our learning, in order that through patience and through the comfort of the Scriptures we may have hope. (Romans 15: 4)
Words of Life. Man shall not live on bread only, but on every saying proceeding from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4: 4)
Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1: 8)
This is a guide to reading the bible for better understanding of God, the people and their decisions.
It is not the bible study lesson plan where we discuss prophecy and doctrines in depth in a series of lessons.
Is there a benefit, can you understand God?
Can you by searching find out God? Can you find out the Almighty unto perfection? [KJV]
Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? [NASB] (Job 11: 7)
The answer is yes! If you search for Him with all your heart, for all your life He will make you find Him.
"But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul. (Deuteronomy 4: 29)

Writers
Who are these writers? All prophecy is from the mind of the Holy Spirit.
But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation. for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Peter 1: 20-21)
Other helpful writings were encouraged by the Holy Spirit.
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3: 16-17)

1. Old Testament Writers. 39 books from 27 authors written on scrolls of clean animal skin. Major writers are.
   • Moses. The Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), Job, Psalm 90.
   • Samuel. Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel.
   • Kings. The 400 year history of the kings of Judah and Israel were complied from many prophets.
   • Prophets. They wrote the books with their names.
   • Psalms. Songs, hymns and praises to God.
     • David. Second king of Israel, musician and poet. He wrote most of the Psalms and some were Messianic prophecies. 1 Samuel 16: 16-18; 2 Samuel 1: 19-27; 3: 33-34; 6: 5; 15-16; 23: 2;
     • Asaph. Seer, prophet, Levite and musician appointed by David. (1 Chrononicles 6: 31-36; 16: 4-7, 37; 25: 2; 2 Chronicles 29: 30; (Nehemiah 16: 46,47) Many of his Psalms are prophecies of the judgment and wrath of God.
     • Korah, Heman, Ethan. Levite and musicians appointed by David. 1 Chrononicles 25: 1-7. The Psalms labeled "for the sons of Korah", may have been written by David.
     • Others. Moses and Solomon.
   • Solomon. Psalm 72 and 127, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon.
   • Ezra. Ezra, Nehemiah and Chronicles. Chronicles were written after the Babylonian captivity. It restablished the genealogies of the tribes of Levi, Judah and Benjamin. It also repeats the stories from the books of Kings and Samuel about the exploits of the kings of Judah from David to the Babylonian captivity.
   • Lost Books. The Old Testament mentions other books that record the acts of the kings of Judah and Israel.
     • King Solomon. "in the records of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer". (2 Chronicles 9: 29)
     • King Abijah. The prophet Iddo. (2 Chronicles 13: 22)
     • King Jehoshaphat. The annals of Jehu the son of Hanani (2 Chronicles 20: 34)
     • The Book of Jasher. (Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1: 18). All Jasher books are probably fakes.
     » Apocrypha. Written in Greek. They were never considered to be inspired words of the prophets by the Jews. The book of the Maccabees is considered history of the Jewish revolt under Greek occupation. Any other claim of lost books must be rejected as inspired but might be considered as history, fiction or records of superstition of those times.
2. New Testament Writers. 27 books. Major writers of the New Testament were the disciples of Christ and Paul who was called to minister to the Gentiles. All were eyewitnesses. They began writing about their first hand experiences after they began to get old, the original eye witnesses were dying and it was obvious that Jesus might not return in their life time. But they still lived as if the Second Coming was imminent.
   God said that any truth must be established by two or more eye witnesses.
   • Paul. 27 "epistles" of Romans to Hebrews. Most were letters to churches. The early churches were eyewitnesses to the fact that Saul persecuted the church, then Ananias witnessed to his conversion.
   • John. The disciple John (1, 2 and 3), the Gospel of John and Revelation.
   • Disciples. They wrote the books bearing their names (Matthew, Mark, Peter).
   • James. A brother of Jesus and later a leader in the church.
   • Luke. Luke and Acts. These books are attributed to a companion of Paul by some. Luke copies Mark.
   • Lost Book? So called "lost books" or books written after 100 AD by those who were not eye-witnesses are rejected as uninspired. They are frauds or Jewish fables (Titus 1: 14) or Gentile fables or personal opinions.
     » Book Of Enoch. Jude 1: 14, mentions a prophecy of Enoch about the Second Coming.
     A document called the "Book of Enoch" has parts that can be traced to 300 BC (Book of Watchers) - 100BC (Book of Parables), thousands of years after Enoch lived.

Reading Plans
There are 1,189 chapters in the Bible. They are arranged by law, history, prophecy and other writings. There are four basic ways to read the bible.

• Canonical. The printed order of the books from beginning to end (Genesis to Revelation).
  Reading 3 and 1/4 chapters per day will complete the study in one year.
• Historical. The order physically written (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek). The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament in Greek. Scholars sometimes decide when a book was written based on the contents. For this reason, many prophecies are dated after the fulfillment because they believe that the prophet cannot know the future. Daniel is dated after the Greek occupation and the parts of the gospel that predict the fall of the temple are dated after 70 AD. For this reason, this order of study is speculative because the biblical "scholars" are unbelieving critics.
• Topical. Read by subject. The biggest danger is taking things out of context. But this arrangement is good for studying important topics such as doctrines. A good concordance is the best way to find and study any topic. While a topical study might list the texts with the word or phrase, it cannot account for symbols that address these topics. And if it does include symbolic references, you may be relying on the author's personal beliefs about which symbols are important and what they mean. For example, a topical study of the Messiah in the old Testament might give references to "Holy One of Israel", "Anointed One" and may even list Messianic prophecies that do not mention these words. But how many would list these topics as part of the Messianic texts that describe what the Messiah would do and experience and accomplish?
  • Sacrificial Laws. Christ sheds His blood from the garden of Gethsemane up to His death.
  • Dietary Laws. How the Lamb of God was killed, swallowed and regurgitated on the earth.
  • Sanctuary. The schedule and the location of tasks accomplished.
  • The Feasts of Israel. Major acts in the schedule of the Plan of Salvation.
  • The Tribes of Israel. His experience as the Son of Man in the hands of the people.
  • The Camping Arrangements of Israel. The emotional siege of Christ in His final week.
  • The Exodus Experience. The order of His experience of suffering.
  • The Experience of the Patriarchs and Prophets. An example of the decisions and experience of Christ.
• Chronological. The order events occurred. This helps to understand important events and concurrent players.

Introduction
We will use the chronological order, primarily to match the prophet with the kings and the history. We will do a topical study on the Plan of Salvation where we will highlight certain key concepts to help you to understand why God acted the way He did. Certain concepts also establish a timeline in the Plan of Salvation by legally defining the actions of God.

• Covenant. The covenant is the principal concept in understanding the actions of God. It is a legal agreement that God established from the beginning with Adam and Eve and constantly tried to renew with each faithful believer chosen. It establishes God's duty and the appropriate response of humans. It defines what is expected for obedience and disobedience.
  The sad history of the covenant is that God was always faithful while humans were not. God's final solution was to write the covenant in our hearts. Read the lesson on the covenant before beginning. It teaches these main facts.
  • Participants. The covenant is binding on the participants, his children and household.
  • The Law. The law is the covenant. It addressses moral issues, diet and foods, sacrifices and consequences. As you compare the prophecies, their fulfillment and the law you will be amazed by the remarkable fact that God is so faithful, consistent and predictable in keeping the covenant, that His future actions can be defined by the law.
    God introduces Himself in the first four commandments.
    1. One God. Here is Your God! God introduced Himself to the world and gives Himself as an offering.
    2. Idolatry. Do not worship idols. God gives us warning about our enemy.
    3. Name of God. Do not take His name in vain. God gives us His name.
    4. Sabbath. God gives us rest.
  • Consequence: Blessings. God blesses us for obedience. The blessings are in the law.
  • Consequence: Curses. God punishes us for disobedience. But the punishment occurs in five phases. Each getting worse. The curses show how God deals with the wicked.
    1. Personal Safety. No peace or safety, raids, only fear.
    2. Land. Famine, drought.
    3. Children. Wild beasts, slavery, occupation.
    4. War. War, famine and pestilence and siege.
    5. The Wrath of God. The final phase of punishment is called "The Wrath of God". When this occurs, God allows all the previous punishments. In addition, there is desolation which cause the city and the sanctuary to be destroyed by the enemy and the people are exiled.
    Testing. The righteous can be tested for faithfulness. It establishes obedience based on love and respect, not on the material blessings or fear. (Abraham, Job, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Christ).
    Suffering. As you try to understand God's behavior, consider suffering and punishment not as what God sends in revenge, but what you asked for in rebellion. Suffering occurs when God reluctantly gives you over to what you desire and removes any of His good influence. His withdrawal leaves us vulnerable. He allows suffering but He does not cause it. Our choices cause suffering.
    Humiliation or Kindness. The fact that God allows suffering by giving us over to what we desire, does not mean that He approves of the methods of our enemies. He simply states what they will do. God has no pleasure in gloating, torture or inhumane treatment. In fact, He will punish nations who do these things. There is no law against treating your enemies with kindness.
• Sanctuary. The sanctuary was introduced to the Jews. It is a picture of the Plan of Salvation.
• Feasts. The feasts are a timeline of the Plan of Salvation. They are a history of how God deals with the righteous. Although the sanctuary and feasts were formally introduced to the Jews, you will find elements of them in previous events.
  The Plan of Salvation is in the order of the feasts of Israel which are blessings from God.
  • Passover. Jesus is the substitute for sin who guarantees our personal safety.
  • Pentecost. The gift of the Spirit who is the rain from Heaven.
  • Trumpets. A call to the people to gather for judgment and repentance.
  • Yom Kippur. Judgment and approval of the righteous people of the covenant.
  • Tabernacles. Living in the sanctuary of God with God and under the protection of God.
  The Plan of Salvation is also in the order of the seasons and planting cycles.
  • Barley Harvest. The fruit from the dead earth.
  • Former Rain. The Holy Spirit is given to the church.
  • Wheat Harvest. The fruit of the first outpouring of the Spirit plants the foundation of the church.
  • Summer Drought. No rain. The church is in apostasy.
  • Latter Rain. The Holy Spirit is given to the church.
  • Fruit Harvest. The great harvest results from this outpouring of the Spirit.
  • Ploughing and Reaping. God comes to take the righteous and bury the wicked in the ground.
• Prophet. We will look at the role of a prophet as not just one who foretold the future. A prophet is one whose primary role is to lead the people back to obedience to the covenant. As the prophet calls the people to repentance, he or she also exhibits the judgment coming on the people in his or her life.
  
  The Imminence Of The Message. In Jewish understanding, if a prophet tells the future it must be useful for that generation. For this reason, although they acknowledge Daniel as writing about the future, his prophecies are so far in the future they were of no use to the current people. Therefore, he is listed as one of the writings but not a prophet. A prophet must also instruct the current generation.
• Messiah. Look for Messianic prophecies. As you read certain portions of the Torah, look at it as future instructions for the Messiah to follow.

Bein Hametzorim (Between the Tragedies).
Several tragedies occurred during the three weeks between the fasts of the fifth and seventh month. We highlight this phenomenon to show that the feasts and fasts may point to a prophetic pattern that may be repeated at the end of time.

Shiva Asar B'Tamuz (Fast of the fourth month). On the seventeenth of Tammuz the following occurred.
• Golden Calf. Moses returned to see them worshipping the golden calf and broke the tables of the law.
• Nebuchadnezzar's Siege of Jerusalem (587 BCE). Sacrifices stopped when they ran out of sheep.
• First Temple (586 BCE). Nebuchadnezzar breached the walls of Jerusalem.
• Second Temple (70AD). Titus, the Roman general, breached the walls of Jerusalem.
• Romans. Apostomos, captain of the Roman forces burned the Torah and placed an idol in the sanctuary.
• Manasseh's Desecration. King Manasseh placed an idol in the Kodesh Kedoshim (2 Kings 21: 7).
• Modern Tragedies. Pope Gregory IX ordered the confiscation of all manuscripts of the Talmud (1239). Over 4,000 Spanish Jews were killed in Toledo and Jaen, Spain (1391). The Jewish Quarter of Prague was burned and looted (1559). The entire population of the Kovno ghetto was sent to the death camps (1944). Libya ordered the confiscation of all Jewish property (1970).

Tisha B'Av (Fast of the fifth month). On the ninth of Av the temples (Bait Hamikdash) were destroyed and other events occurred.
• Banished. God decreed that the Jews who were saved from the Egyptian bondage will die in the desert.
• First Temple (586 BCE). King Solomon's temple was destroyed by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzer.
• Second Temple (70 CE). It was destroyed by Titus and his Roman soldiers.
• Bar Kochba Revolt (135 CE). The Romans captured the fortress city of Beitar, the last stronghold of the leaders of the Bar Kochba revolt, and Bar Kochba along with tens of thousands of Jews were massacred.
• Jerusalem Destroyed (136 CE). Exactly a year later, the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the wicked Turnus Rufus to plow up the city of Jerusalem, so that there should be no memory of the holy city. He then established a heathen temple on the site of the temple and rebuilt Jerusalem as a pagan city, renamed Aelia Capitolina, which the Jews were forbidden to enter.
• Modern Tragedies. The anti-Jewish riots and the mass suicide of the Jews of York, England (1190). King Edward I signed the edict compelling the Jews to leave England (1290). The expulsion of 200,000 Jews from Spain in the Spanish inquisition (1492). The First World War (1914). The Arabs began their riots in the city of Jerusalem resulting in the Jewish massacre in Hebron (1929). Deportation of the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto (1942).
